(A Foreigner’s Guide to Korean Cinemas)
If you’re visiting Korea, spending an afternoon or evening at the movies is a great way to experience everyday local life. Korean cinemas are clean, comfortable, and modern, making them a perfect place to relax during your trip.
I usually go to CGV, but Korea also has two other major cinema chains: Lotte Cinema and MEGABOX. All three offer modern facilities and a similar movie-going experience, so you can simply choose whichever location is most convenient.
🎟️ I Usually Book My Tickets Through the App
Before heading to the theater, I usually book my ticket using the CGV app.
I choose the movie, pick my seat, pay through the app, and simply arrive a little before the movie starts. It’s the easiest and most convenient way for me.
If you can’t pay through the app, don’t worry. You can still buy your ticket at the ticket counter or by using one of the self-service kiosks at the theater.
Even if you don’t use the app to purchase tickets, I still recommend downloading it. It’s a great way to check real-time seat availability, movie schedules, and nearby theater locations before deciding where to go.
🌏 Don’t Worry If You Don’t Speak Korean
Many visitors worry about the language barrier, but Korean movie theaters are actually very easy to use.
You can buy tickets, order popcorn, and purchase drinks using the self-service kiosks.
Many kiosks also offer an English language option, so even if you don’t speak Korean, using the theater is usually simple and stress-free.
🛋️ My Favorite Choice Is a Recliner Theater
Whenever possible, I always choose a recliner auditorium.
The tickets usually cost a little more, but the seats are incredibly comfortable and make the entire movie experience much more enjoyable.
If you’re planning to watch a longer movie, I definitely think it’s worth trying.
🍿 Somehow, I Always End Up Ordering Caramel Popcorn
I don’t usually have a sweet tooth, but for some reason, whenever I go to the movies, I always end up choosing caramel popcorn.
I can’t really explain why—it has simply become part of my movie routine.
If you prefer savory flavors, many theaters also offer options such as cheese or onion popcorn, although the available flavors may vary by location.
🗑️ What Should You Do With Your Trash?
This is one of the things that surprises many first-time visitors.
In Korea, it’s considered good movie theater etiquette to take your trash with you when leaving the auditorium rather than leaving it at your seat.
Exactly how you dispose of it depends on the theater.
At some locations, a staff member may be waiting outside the auditorium to collect popcorn tubs, drink cups, and other trash.
At other locations, you’ll simply carry everything to a self-service sorting station.
Whenever I leave the theater, I first check whether a staff member is collecting trash. If not, I just take everything to the sorting station myself.
♻️ Using the Trash Sorting Station Is Easy
The sorting stations are clearly labeled with pictures, so they’re easy to use even if you can’t read Korean.
Generally, you’ll:
- Pour any remaining drink into the liquid disposal container.
- Place empty drink cups in the cup collection bin.
- Return or dispose of popcorn tubs in the designated container.
- Throw napkins, straws, and other general waste into the general trash bin.
It might look confusing at first, but after doing it once, it’s actually very simple.
🚗 Don’t Forget to Validate Your Parking
If you’re driving to the theater, I recommend checking whether your parking needs to be validated before you leave.
Many cinemas have a parking validation machine near the ticketing area or on the cinema floor.
It only takes a few seconds, but forgetting to do it could mean paying a higher parking fee.
Whenever I drive to the movies, parking validation is one of the last things I do before heading back to my car.
